HARLEN MUNSÖ

harlenmunso.com is a creative project by the elusive artist Dick Munson who creates whatever he has to in order to produce the intended outcome. He is a painter, doodler, designer, producer, actor, videographer, and activist based in Seattle, WA. He has participated in group shows at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Spill Festival of Performance, Asian Song Society, Ramiken Crucible, Village.Berlin, and The Institute of Contemporary Art of London. In 2007 Dick cofounded an art collective “The Church of Late Night Sinners”. With this project he was focused on video production for the bands; Cyclobe and Massimo & Pierce. In 2008 Dick’s curatorial contributions for Homoccult & Other Esoterotica included Ron Athey, Black Sun Productions (Massimo & Pierce), Erika Keck (graphics), Terence Koh, Micki Pellerano, Nasty Pig, Breyer P-Orridge, SUPERM (Slava Mogutin & Brian Kenny), for an evening of Film organized further by Daniel McKernan. Dick’s video projects were first introduced at MIX NYC and then eventually shown globally at Tel Aviv International LGBT Film Fest, Xposed, Teatro Das Artis, Outfest, Torino GLBT film festival, Visions of Excess, and The Horse Hospital to name a few. Somehow Dick found himself in an informal internship with many folks in Fashion including; Kokontozai, Cassette Playa, Artlist Paris, Hood By Air, Telfar, Meadham Kirtchoff, and Tim Hamilton. Collaborating with stylists, artists, and designers comes naturally with Dick Munson and it’s seen in multiple creative presentations and publications including but not limited to; Vogue Hommes Japan, German GQ, Muse, Tokion, Sang Bleu, Mixte, Rodeo, Wallpaper, Pin-Up, and Dazed and Confused Japan.

While in East Hamptons he worked as a gallery and collections specialist and curated an exhibition in 2011 of artists in celebration of women,Gloria Hole, featuring the work of Math Bass, Cass Bird, Lizzi Bougatsos, Eve Fowler, Erika Keck, Julia Kent, Terence Koh, Natalya Laskis, Liza Lou, Gloria Maximo, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Olympia Scarry, Aurel Schmidt, Odile Bernard Schroder, Cindy Sherman, Astrid Mery Sinivassin and Agathe Snow. He just wanted to showcase a feminine strength that felt inclusive in a setting where he felt these qualities needed to be celebrated, seen, and acknowledged back then and even more so today. He is left with eternal gratitude for each and every individual who let him showcase their work and those who helped make Gloria Hole a reality.

Dick Munson was in a cycle of abusive relationships and fled his career paths in 2014. He created harlenmunso.com as a space beyond himself with a different history. This is a vessel that can change and evolve and also sit and be uncomfortable within a capitalist society.
